The committee met on September 6 and 7, 2002 to discuss plans for the next two years.

 

 

PLAN FOR 2002-2003

 

1-Five “Information Sheets” will be developed by the committee to be reviewed by the CSHA Board by September 2003 on the following topics: When accepted, they will be available on the Diversity Page of the CSHA Website.

 

A-Language of Intervention (Brochure) –Kathy

B-Issues in Training Related to CLD Issues (Brief two-page report)-Ellen-as follow-up to limited response to previous attempts to obtain information.

C-Establishing language and cultural proficiency for clinical management (Brief two-page report)-Bettina

D-Issues related to the 0-3 CLD population (Brief two-page report) -Luna

E-Issues related to the older CLD population (Brief two-page report)-Henriette

 

All reports will include five key references and key websites that relate to the topic.

 

2-Feeback from members at the CSHA Monterey Spring conference (2003) will be collected. Attendees to our seminar as well as BAMSHA/CABLSS participants will be asked to write quick comments on each of the five areas presented, and to rank in order of importance other “ Informational Sheets” they would like to have developed the following year (From areas listed below). The committee will select 7 to 8 of those areas to be voted on.

3-Documents ready for pre-review amongst the Committee members by June 1st 2003

4- Henriette will coordinate the documents and submit initial drafts to Mary Ann Christman Phelps by September 2003.

5-When reviewed and approved by the CSHA Board, we want to post these documents on the CSHA Diversity Web page.

 

PLAN FOR 2003-2004

Based on feedback from attendees at the conference, the committee will prioritize three to five areas to be worked on during the 2003-2004 academic year.

 

Areas Considered:

These areas which are listed below do not follow any particular order. Some of the topics are already covered by either ASHA or other websites, but the committee wishes to update them or make them more applicable to issues unique to California.

  • General Assessment Issues pertaining the CLD Populations

  • Intervention- Language Use in the Home

  • Clinician Interaction/Training and Participation

  • Scholarships and Opportunities for Students who Wish to Specialize in Working with the CLD Population.

  • Connecting with SLP Assistants who are Bilingual

  • Check-off list of what is normally expected in language acquisition in a dual environment.

  • Working with Interpreters and Translations

  • Suggestions for contacting persons from other cultures/languages

  • Impact of Gender/Age/SES differences

  • Legal Considerations when working with ELL Students

  • Impact on Accent in Clinical Delivery

  • Language Universals-What to know about child’s dual language development

  • Transition into literacy-

  • . ELL students’ language proficiency assessment and language teaching.

  • Linguistic/culturally appropriate language for successful clinical management

(For the 2004 CSHA conference we would like to offer a seminar on how to structure a course to develop linguistic abilities for clinical services in a given language for trainers of trainers workshops/clinical supervisors)

  • Hearing /issues in Audiological Assessment and Intervention.

  • What is New in Research on the CLD Population?

 

NEXT MEETINGS:

1-Face to face: February 7, 2003-12AM-4PM in San José.

This meeting precedes a one-day workshop by Dr. Brian Goldstein  (Temple University) on Bilingual Phonology to be presented at San José State University on February 8th, 2003.  Date is confirmed.

2-Face to face: Following the CSHA presentation in Monterey in April 2003.
